It's Here! The long-awaited Spirit of Uganda Tour arrives.

January 24, 2008

The long-awaited Spirit of Uganda tour is now underway. The children recently arrived in the U.S. after giving a farewell performance at a theater in Uganda for their guardians, friends, and family. As expected, it was a bittersweet time -- excitement about the upcoming tour mingled with a little apprehension about being away from home for so long.

The children arrived here safely after long flights from Uganda. Making those flights is always interesting, considering it involves transporting 22 exuberant children, their costumes, and instruments (including no less than a 12-foot-long xylophone). But they made it!

The kids are in northern California right now preparing for their first public performances this Saturday at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts in Davis, California. With the help of Macy's, the tour's national sponsor, Spirit of Uganda will spend the next few weeks in California before heading east in an attention-getting -- and very well-equipped -- tour bus.

The Tour is already generating some great press. Here's a wonderful story from the Sacramento Bee, and for a sneak-peak of the kids in action, watch this video of a live performance that appeared on CBS13's "Good Day, Sacramento."
