U.S. Scholarship Student Sarah Mbabazi Update

January 15, 2008

We're thrilled to report that Sarah Mbabazi - one of our U.S. Scholarship Students - graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio, Texas) with a degree in child and adolescent psychology. Sarah is a living example of the mission of Empower African Children, which is to transform the lives of orphans and vulnerable children "through the power of an innovative education."

"I've known Sarah for over 14 years, since 1993 when I first lived in Uganda," says Alexis Hefley, Empower African Children's Founder and CEO. "In fact, she was one of the first children I met the first week I was in Africa. I have seen her mature into a charming, graceful young woman. She has excelled in school and over the last four years I've watched her gain confidence and a perseverance and determination to accomplish things she sees in life - and go for them."

Sarah attributes that confidence to the education provided for her by the scholarship program. "Empower African Children has helped me finish school and I cannot put a price on that," she says. "I am so grateful, because I now have endless opportunities and I can dream big because I've been educated."

Part of those dreams include the possibility of graduate school, but Sarah's more excited about her immediate plans: she'll be joining Spirit of Uganda as they embark on their 2008 National Tour. Sarah will be our up-close-and-personal blogger for the tour, providing regular photos and updates, from the opening drumbeat in Davis, California on January 26, to the close of the curtain in Dallas on May 1.

"Sarah has dreamed of what life could be, and through many levels of empowerment her dreams are coming true," Alexis says. "She's just like many of the young people supported by Empower African Children, with a world of possibility before them. What a privilege to know I was blessed to share this journey with her."

Congratulations, Sarah! We're excited about the end of one journey - from a young child in Uganda being raised by an elderly grandmother to a university graduate - and the beginning of a new one with the promise of great things to come.
